My love of photography began as a child in Philadelphia. Our family didn’t own a camera, and I saved up my allowance and bought one for myself when I was about 13. The film was expensive so most people waited for a special occasion to take pictures, but not me. I took pictures of everyday events because I wanted to remember how my family was as I was growing up: Mom doing the dishes, my sister riding her bike, things like that. My family thought these pictures were a waste, but I still treasure them to this day because looking at them brings back the feeling of being home as a child.
So what about Mark? We shared the hobby of photography while dating. However, it wasn’t until we had the first baby that we received a really good camera as a shower gift. We took lots of shots with the goal in mind that we could save money by getting our own pictures instead of going to a professional. We tried using large table cloths as backdrops and obviously had the most beautiful daughters as models, but we were disappointed when our results were never professional quality. So Barb started taking night school courses to learn more about photography and understand what we were doing wrong. We stepped up from hobbyist to professional after Barb earned an Associates’s Degree studying photography and art at Montgomery County Community College. That was the jumping-off point to many years of studying with expert photographers. We both belonged to the PPA and the local photography guild and attended many classes. Over the 20 or so years we have also invested in top-of-the-line equipment. So that’s what it took to have our pictures look “professional.” Boy did we have great times learning this profession together!
